Desktop Buddy
System Requirements
In order to run Desktop Buddy, you will need a reasonably well specified computer. You should check the list of requirements carefully. You will need at least:
- An IBM compatible personal computer with a processor running at 1.0Ghz or higher;
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home or Professional) operating system;
- 128 MB of RAM memory;
- A graphics card/display adapter, with 32 MB of memory, that supports either DirectX version 9.0 or higher or OpenGL 1.3 or higher;
- A 16 bit soundcard and speakers;
- Java Version 5 or above;
- One or more SAPI 4 or SAPI 5 compatible speech synthesis engines (Two high quality voices provided with the Full Version).
- An Internet connection - for the newsfeeds.
Display Memory
In order to check the memory of the display adapter (also known as a graphics card or video card), open the Display Properties applet either from your computer's Control Panel or by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting Properties.
Select the Settings tab and click on the Advanced button, then select the Adapter tab. You will find a description of your Adapter including the Memory Size. Some laptops use on board memory of 16MB or less. Unfortunately, these are not suitable for use with Desktop Buddy. We recommend NVIDIA or ATI based graphics cards.
Synthesized Voices
The full, licensed version of Desktop Buddy is supplied with two of the highest quality synthesized voices available (one male and one female), each requiring around 700 MB of hard disk space.
The trial version, however, does not come with any voices. Nevertheless, most Windows XP computers have at least one SAPI 4 or SAPI 5 voice already installed and others are widely available. Check the Resources page for more information on where to obtain additional voices.
You can get an idea of how many voices you have installed on your computer by looking at the Speech applet in the Windows Control Panel.
